Botulinum Neurotoxins
Botox®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®

Wrinkle relaxing botulinum toxin type A injections, aka neurotoxins, are the most common non-invasive aesthetic procedure in the U.S. They are simple non-surgical treatments to reduce or eliminate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and can also be used to prevent the lines from developing. These products can safely and successfully treat wrinkles that are caused by muscle contractions such as frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet to give you a refreshed, younger look. They are commonly all called “Botox,” but there are actually 5 different FDA-approved neurotoxins used to treat similar aesthetic concerns. At Glass Dermatology, we currently offer 4 of them including: Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin®.
On the day of your appointment, we will decide together which toxin is best for you based on your needs and budget. Here are some things they all have in common.
-
They all paralyze the muscle from contracting so that the wrinkle cannot be formed.
-
They do NOT treat lines at rest; however, they may soften them.
-
They are used to treat frown lines (the “11s”), forehead lines, and wrinkles around the eyes (“crow’s feet”).
-
They are also used off-label to treat wrinkles around the nose (“bunny lines”), the chin (“golf ball chin”), a “lip flip”, and small lines around the mouth.
-
Their effects last on average 3 months, but this is dependent on the patient and how much toxin they receive. Patients that receive lower amounts of toxin may notice they have shorter lasting results because their body is able to metabolize the product faster.
Which toxin is right for you? Read below to learn more about their unique differences.
How much does it cost? Our neurotoxins are priced per unit. The amount of units a person requires varies greatly depending on their facial structure and muscle movement. However, on average it takes around 10-25 units to treat the frown lines, 10-20 units to treat forehead lines, and anywhere from 3 to 12 units per side to treat crow's feet. Please call our office to receive the most updated prices per unit.

Botox® is the brand name of an injectable (onabotulinumtoxinA) produced by Allergan Inc. It has been approved the longest, receiving FDA approval in 2002, and is the most popular neuromodulator. Botox® contains Botulinum toxin type A, hence its name., and also small amounts of albumin and sodium chloride.
-
Results take full effect at around 2 weeks
-
Due to being the 1st neurotoxin approved, it is very well-known and studied with predictable results on most patients.
-
Rewards program called Alle
-
Alle is an app downloaded on your phone through the app store
-
Every time you receive anything cosmetic – you are rewarded with points that can redeemed for future cash discounts. You can use this for any treatment, but is best used for Allergan products such as Botox, Juvederm filler, DiamondGlow facial, and SkinMedica products.

Jeuveau® (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs), sold by the company Evolus, is the "new Botox". This product first became available to the public after FDA approval in February 2019. Jeuveau® has a similar composition to Botox®, the key difference between the two brands is that Jeuveau® is approximately 20% less expensive than Botox®.
-
Results take effect more similar to Dysport with most noticing results at 1 week. However, we recommend waiting the full 2 weeks to evaluate the effects.
-
Budget-friendly alternative to Botox with a similar chemical composition
-
Rewards program called Evolus Rewards
-
Every 3 months, most patients are eligible for $40 off their injection.
-

Xeomin®, sold by Merz and FDA approved in 2011, it is similar to Botox® and other toxins, but it doesn't contain some of the complex proteins they contain. Xeomin® is a “naked” toxin and experts consider it the purest injectable. This gives Xeomin® an advantage as only containing the active toxin without unnecessary additives. This can reduce the risk of allergic reactions and antibody resistance over time (however this is very rare).

Results take full effect at around 2 weeks

Dysport® (abotulinumtoxin-A), sold by Galderma and first FDA approved in 2009, consists of the same active ingredient as Botox®, but with a few key differences.
-
Fastest onset - Results take full effect at 2 weeks, but you may notice it “kicks in” much quicker around 1 week
-
Dysport units are not equivalent to other units of toxin. We price ours at an “equivalent amount” of units.
-
Has a higher rate of diffusion, making it ideal for treating larger areas. (However, those with heavier upper eyelids sometimes feel extra heavy due to this diffusion.)
-
Many patients feel their results may last a little longer, compared to other toxins, but this is not seen in all patients.
